JINJA, Uganda — A Ugandan teacher’s life took a dramatic turn when he won 400 million Ugandan shillings from fixed games betting, prompting him to quit his job and start anew.
Patrick, a former secondary school teacher, said he was driven by financial struggles to take a chance on betting.
“I was skeptical at first, but after researching and reading testimonials from Uganda Bettors Association, I decided to take the risk,” Patrick said in an interview.
After paying for the bet and providing his bank details, Patrick said he was shocked when the association called him to announce that he had won.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Patrick said. “I thought it was a scam. But when I checked my account, the money was there.”
With his newfound wealth, Patrick has decided to leave teaching behind and focus on investing.
“I don’t want to be controlled by greed,” Patrick said. “I want to invest wisely and secure my future.”
Patrick’s decision to quit teaching highlights the challenges faced by educators in Uganda, where low salaries and limited opportunities can drive talented individuals out of the profession.
“Teachers are not well-paid, and the working conditions are not good,” said Patrick, who declined to name his former school. “I’m just glad that I have a chance to start anew.”
