A brazen daylight robbery has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s financial sector, with two G4S security guards accused of stealing a staggering Shs1,069,420,000 and USD 14,474 in cash.
The heist, which occurred on November 19, has raised serious questions about the security measures in place to protect cash-in-transit operations. According to sources, the two guards allegedly conspired to rob the bullion van, which was transporting cash from Lubowa to Nakasero.
The thieves abandoned the bullion van, registration number UAJ 199T, in Nabunya, Rubaga Division, along with two rifles. Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, with one person, Ambrose Richard Otim, already arrested in connection with the robbery.
As the investigation continues, concerns are growing about the potential impact of the heist on Uganda’s economy. The country’s financial sector is already reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this latest incident is likely to add to the uncertainty.
The police have assured the public that they are doing everything in their power to recover the stolen cash and bring the perpetrators to justice.
