Mumbai, Kampala – Indian-origin billionaire Pankaj Oswal and his wife, Radhika, have gone into hiding at a secret location, dedicating themselves to securing the release of their daughter, Vasundhara, who has been imprisoned in Uganda for over three weeks.
Vasundhara, 26, was detained on October 1 by armed police officers in Uganda, allegedly related to a missing person investigation. Her family claims the charges are fabricated and the accused individual is alive in Tanzania.
Pankaj Oswal and his wife feel “immensely guilty” about sending Vasundhara to Uganda, according to their younger daughter, Riddhi Oswal. The family believes the detention is illegal, and Vasundhara was arrested without a warrant.
Vasundhara has spent three weeks in prison, living in subhuman conditions. Her family says she has been treated like a convicted criminal. Riddhi Oswal stated that her parents cannot travel to Uganda due to fears of immediate arrest by corrupt officials.
“The police in Uganda have too much power and can arrest people on a whim,” Riddhi said. The Oswal family is working tirelessly to secure Vasundhara’s release. Riddhi has taken charge of family and business matters while her parents focus on the case.
Vasundhara was in Uganda developing the family’s $100 million grain-based Extra-Neutral Alcohol (ENA) production facility. Her detention has sparked concerns about the safety of foreign investors in Uganda.
The case has highlighted issues with Uganda’s justice system and corruption within its law enforcement agencies.
