The National Identity and Registration Authority (NIRA) has made it easier for Ugandans to check their national identity details through various channels. Citizens can now visit the NIRA website to access their information or dial *216# on their mobile phones to retrieve their National Identification Number (NIN).
Additionally, MTN Uganda subscribers can dial *1973# to confirm their National ID details online (NIN), as well as their given name and surname. The NIRA Call Centre is also available to provide assistance and answer queries on 0800211700.
A National Identification Number (NIN) is a unique 14-digit number assigned to each citizen or legal resident of Uganda at birth or immigration. NIRA, established in 2013, is responsible for registering and issuing national identity cards, registering resident aliens, and issuing alien identity cards, among other services.
In a recent development, NIRA officials emphasized the importance of updating data for children who have turned 16, making it easier for them to obtain identity cards. The officials encouraged citizens to be responsive to government programs, citing the success of previous NIRA exercises.
The National Guidance commissioner has pledged to support NIRA activities, urging others to do the same. With these new channels, Ugandans can now easily access and verify their national identity details.
