KAMPALA– In a significant ruling on the 6th of May 2024, the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala, presided over by the Hon. Lady Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha confirmed charges of Trafficking in Children and Aggravated Defilement against Chelimo Julius Moses, the former LC 5 Chairperson of Bukwo District.
The Prosecution presented compelling evidence to the court, indicating that the accused engaged in the above offenses between October 2021 and May 2022 in Bukwo, Mbale, and Kampala.
The Prosecution presented evidence to the court that indicated that the accused person exploited a 16-year-old girl through deception, abuse of power, or exploitation of her vulnerability for sexual purposes.
Additionally, the Prosecution contended that the accused, whilst being in positions of authority over the victim, committed sexual acts on her at various locations in Bukwo District.
Following a thorough review of the evidence presented by the Prosecution, the Court found sufficient grounds to support the charges against Mr. Chelimo. Consequently, the charges were formally confirmed, and he has been referred for trial.
This development represents a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice and the protection of vulnerable individuals from the crimes of defilement and human trafficking.
It underscores the unwavering commitment of the legal system to hold criminals accountable and prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
The Prosecution was represented by Ms. Marion Ben-Bella, a Senior State Attorney in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
