Frank Gashumba faces PLU disciplinary committee for calling CDF Muhoozi over security failures

KAMPALA, UGANDA – Frank Gashumba, a member of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has been summoned to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, over allegations of misconduct.

According to a letter signed by Mawanda Micheal Maranga, MP and Chairman of the PLU Central Commission for Discipline, Gashumba is accused of posting a message on social media criticizing the security forces for their failure to protect Ugandans and their properties.

In the post, Gashumba addressed the Head of UPDF and other security agencies, stating that “if you cannot protect Ugandans with their properties, simply resign. Everyday we see social media clips of Ugandans being assaulted, robbed and even murdered by gangs on the streets of Kampala and several testimonial reports and recordings on different categories of young females, males, traumatized by the thungery (sic) even in broad day light. We as Ugandans, we are wondering why they pay you people salaries. You are paid to protect lives and properties. If these gangs have over powered you, you don’t qualify to wear our uniforms… If UPDF can pacify Somalia, South Sudan and some parts of Congo how can it fail to wipe out these broad day light thugs.”

Gashumba’s post sparked a strong reaction from the PLU leadership, with Mawanda Micheal Maranga stating that “such words meant and were understood to be a public attack on the security forces and the party leadership. We cannot tolerate such disloyalty and disobedience to the party’s principles and values.”

Gashumba has defended his post, saying that “as a citizen and a member of the PLU, I have a right to express my opinions and criticize those in power. The security forces have failed to protect Ugandans, and someone has to speak out. I will not be silenced by the disciplinary committee or anyone else.”

The outcome of the disciplinary hearing is eagerly awaited, as it could have significant implications for Gashumba’s membership in the PLU and the party’s stance on free speech and criticism.

“If the PLU disciplines Gashumba for speaking the truth, it will be a clear indication that the party is more interested in protecting its own interests than in serving the people of Uganda,” said a political analyst who preferred to remain anonymous.
