The Ugandan legal and political communities are mourning the loss of Kiddu Makubuya, a prominent lawyer, politician, and academic who passed away recently. His daughter, Rebecca Nabaggala, confirmed his passing, although the details surrounding his death remain scarce.

Makubuya’s distinguished career spanned over four decades, during which he made significant contributions to Uganda’s legal framework, academic landscape, and political sphere. He served as Uganda’s Attorney General from 2005 to 2011, providing legal guidance to the government and playing a crucial role in shaping the country’s legal policies.

In addition to his tenure as Attorney General, Makubuya held various high-profile positions, including Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, State Minister for Foreign Affairs (International Cooperation), and Minister of Education and Sports. His experience in government was marked by a commitment to public service and a dedication to promoting Uganda’s interests.

Makubuya’s academic credentials are equally impressive. He held a First Class Honors Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, as well as advanced degrees from Yale Law School. He was a respected lecturer and associate professor at Makerere University, and his research interests included jurisprudence, family law, international law, and human rights.

Makubuya was also a member of the Uganda Constitutional Commission, which drafted the 1995 Constitution of Uganda. He played a key role in shaping the country’s legal framework and was a vocal advocate for human rights and the rule of law.

While Makubuya’s tenure in government was not without controversy, his contributions to Uganda’s development are undeniable. His passing leaves a void in the legal and political communities, and his legacy will be cherished by those who admired his work.

Preparations for his burial are underway, and further details are expected to be released soon. As Uganda mourns the loss of this remarkable individual, his family, friends, and colleagues remember his dedication, expertise, and commitment to public service.
