The family of Martha Ahumuza Muraali, who passed away under unclear circumstances at Mezo Noir nightclub in Kampala, has appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information regarding her death.
Her father, Seth Muraali, who serves as the National Sports and Games Coordinator at the Office of the Chairman NRM, urged for patience and respect as authorities conduct investigations into the incident.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the loss of our beloved daughter, Ahumuza Martha. As of now, we ask the public to STOP speculating and circulating wrong information on social media as we put her to rest and let the security organs do their job of investigating,” Muraali said.
Martha reportedly collapsed on Wednesday night after consuming a drink suspected to have been tampered with by a nightclub staff member. She was later taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, the Kira Road Police Station has launched an investigation into a suspected poisoning case at Mezo Noir nightclub in Kololo.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident, stating:
“Kira Road Police Station is investigating a suspected poisoning case that occurred at Mezo Noir bar in Kololo on Wednesday night.”
According to Onyango, Martha had been drinking with Edward Mugabo, a cashier at the bar, from 2 am to 3:30 am before they moved to the manager’s office, which was not covered by CCTV surveillance.
It was inside this office that she suddenly collapsed, prompting Mugabo to seek help from his brother, Joseph Kalenzi. The two rushed her to Kampala Hospital, where she was placed on life support but later died.
Onyango added: “Mugabo and his brother Kalenzi Joseph have been arrested to assist in the investigation and are being held at Kira Road Police Station. The investigation is ongoing.”
Following the incident, authorities detained several bar staff members, and Mezo Noir nightclub temporarily closed, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” Management assured customers that an update on reopening would be provided later.
Martha Ahumuza will be laid to rest on Sunday, March 23, at Nyarubaga Village in Mbarara.
