EXCLUSIVE: Ibrahim Bbossa Leaves URA Comms Role amid toxic environment reports

Ibrahim Bbossa, during his tenure as URA Spokesperson, brought the taxman closer to the citizens

Ibrahim Kibuuka Bbossa, the charismatic and widely respected head of public and corporate affairs at the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), has resigned from his position, bringing an end to an era marked by transparency and accountability in the tax body’s communications.

Bbossa’s departure comes amid reports of a toxic work environment and power struggles within the organization, leaving many to wonder what’s next for the URA’s communications department.

Bbossa, who joined URA in late 2021, has been instrumental in transforming the organization’s public image, leveraging his expertise in communications to promote tax education and awareness. His resignation, effective immediately, has sent shockwaves through the organization, with many colleagues and stakeholders expressing surprise and disappointment.

Sources close to the matter reveal that Bbossa’s departure was prompted by a toxic work environment, characterized by power struggles and resistance to change. Despite his efforts to introduce innovative communications strategies, Bbossa faced opposition from some quarters, leading to a breakdown in relationships and a decline in morale.

Bbossa’s legacy at URA includes the successful implementation of the Mpa E Receipt Yange campaign, which promoted the use of e-receipts among Ugandans, and the establishment of URA TV, a digital broadcasting platform. His commitment to transparency and accountability has earned him widespread respect, both within and outside the organization.

When asked about his next move, Bbossa hinted, “You’ll know soon enough. We are going to be working even more closely.” This cryptic message has sparked speculation about his future plans, with some suggesting he may be headed for a new project or initiative that aligns with his previous work and values.

He has previously worked with the Uganda Communications Commission as the Head Public and International Relations, the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited as a Marketing Specialists, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards as the Principal Marketing Officer, the Uganda Red Cross Society as the Corporate Fundraising Officer and has lectured at the Islamic University in Uganda.

Kibuuka is a Chevening Fellow with a Masters in Communications Management from the University of Rwanda.

He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from London School of Marketing and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Studies from the Islamic University in Uganda where he was later appointed as a lecturer.
