KAMPALA– President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni acted on the advise of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), has made a number of appointments in the Judiciary of Uganda.
Among the appointments which have been announced on Thursday evening, Dr. Flavian Zeija who has been the Principal Judge, has been appointed the Deputy Chief Justice, replacing Justice Richard Buteera who will be retiring in April this year.
‘H.E. the President of Uganda , in exercise of his powers under Article 142 (1) and (2) of the Constitution, has appointed the Deputy Chief Justice, 1 (one) Justice of the Supreme Court, and 8 Justices of the Court of Appeal on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission.” Reads part of the statement from Judicial Service Commission dated 6th February 2025
That In addition to that, the President has also appointed 21 Judges of the High Court in acting capacity into the Judiciary Service for a period of two years from the date of assumption of duty.
“In the same vein, following the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings against her, Hon. Lady Justice Bukirwa Faridah Shamilah has been re-appointed as acting Judge of the High Court for a period of one year. “
Justice Muzamil Kibeddi who has been serving at Court of Appeal, has been elevated to Supreme Court. Her Worship Sarah Langa Siu, the Chief Registrar has been promoted to the position of acting High Court judge.
The new justices of Appeal include;Musa Ssekaana, Ketra Kitariisibwa Katunguka, Sabiiti Cornelia Kakooza, Florence Nakawa, Byaruhanga Jesse, Musisi John Mike and Nambayo Esta.
Among the eighteen Acting Judges appointed is; Simon Peter Kinobe Former Uganda Law Society President, Lilian Omara from the office of the DPP, Ida Nakiganda from Uganda Human Rights Commission, Registrar Mary Kaitesi, Mary Babirye among others
These appointments were part of the last activities conducted by the 6th Commission, led by Hon. Justice Benjamin I. Kabiito whose term of office expired on the 21st of January 2025.
The appointments are In line with the expanded structure of the Judiciary and reflect the Commission’s theme of being the ‘People’s Bridge to Justice’.
