KAMPALA– Key stakeholders from various Civil Society Organizations, youth groups and Political parties have asked the government to release, four time Presidential Aspirant Retired Col Dr. Kiiza Besigye immediately from Luzira Prison where he is being held on charges originating from Makindye General Court Martial.

In a press briefing held at offices of Center for Constitutional governance (CCG) in Ntinda, these noted that continued detention of Besigye is a violation of the constitution as well as an infringement to the rule of law in the country.
“His deteriorating health is alarming and a clear violation of fundamental rights, we need to de militarize justice in Uganda for all citizens and it’s important to note that the worst for of injustice is pretended justice like it is in Uganda.” Sarah Bireete
She added that supreme Court decrees where very clear , declared all provisions of the law for trying Kiiza Besigye a nullity, it means there are no cases to transfer
“Second decree is to cease false charges with immediate effect, it means that whatever the Attorney General and DPP are doing is pretended justice. If the government is to charge Dr. Besigye and others, it should issue fresh charges.”
These have called upon the Ugandan government to respect and uphold the Supreme Court ruling: The government must adhere to the court’s decision regarding the unconstitutionality of trying civilians in military courts and ensure its full implementation in all cases.
“Guarantee access to adequate medical care: Dr. Besigye must be immediately granted access to the specialized medical treatment he urgently requires. Respect the rule of law and human rights: The government must guarantee the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens, including the right to a fair trial and freedom from arbitrary detention.” Remarked Moses Byamugisha Coordinator Young Ugandan Network
Amanyiire Sheila from National Unity Platform (NUP) Women League revealed that they are organizing a peaceful march to Parliament next week with a view of petitioning the Speaker on prolonged detention of Besigye.
