KAMPALA-The High Court Civil Division has fixed tomorrow, Wednesday 19th February 2025 as the date at which it will hear an application filed by Rtd Col Dr. Kiiza Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale challenging their continued detention, from cases originating from General Court Martial even after Supreme Court declaration that civilian trials in this court were all illegal.

According to the hearing Notice signed by the Registry, the matter will be heard in Kampala at 9 am.
Court also fixed the 25th February 2025 as the date to hear Counsel Eron Kiiza’s application.
“TAKE NOTICE that the hearing of this case has been fixed for the 25 Feb 2025 10:00 AM O’clock in the fore/afternoon or soon thereafter as the case can be heard in this court. If no appearance is made on your behalf, by yourself/your pleader or someone authorized by law to act for you, the case will be heard in your absence.” Reads part of the hearing notice dated 18th Feb 2025 signed by Registrar Simon Kintu Zirintuusa
The Registrar adds that, incase ,no appearance is made on , by any of the parties , pleader or someone authorized by law to act for them , the case will be heard in their absence.
The hearing Notice has been addressed to Eron Kiiza (Applicant) Attorney General and Commissioner General of Prisons (Respondents).
Eron Kiiza, who was one of the lawyers representing Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, was on January 7th , arrested, charged and convicted by the General Court Martial chaired by Brig Gen Free man Mugabe for contempt of Court.
He was Sentenced to nine months imprisonment, which he later challenged before the General Court Martial appeal. The matter is now pending hearing.
Later, on 31st January 2025, Supreme Court ruled that trying of civilians before the General Court Martial was illegal, the justices ordered for transfer the files to civilians courts among other declarations and orders.
