Breaking: Ugandan Athlete Cheptegei is dead

Rebecca Cheptegei a Ugandan Athlete living in Kenya has passed away on Thursday morning as a result of wounds resulting from an attack her by her boyfriend.

Rebecca Cheptegei, a distance runner who finished at the 44th position in the 2024 Paris Olympics, was attacked in her house in the western Trans Nzoia County by her boyfriend.

The news surrounding her death have been announced by the Uganda Athletics Federation the body which has been managing her.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.” Reads the communication from the federation posted on their official Twitter page.

At the beginning of this week, news broke that Rebecca had been set on fire by her boyfriend and 75 percent of her body had been burnt

This was confirmed byTrans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah who revealed that Cheptegei’s boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, bought a jerrican of petrol, poured it on her and set her ablaze during a disagreement Sunday. They both sustained injuries and were admitted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city.

Biography

Rebecca was born on 22nd February 2024 in Uganda. She is 54 kilograms , 5 feet and 4 inches tall

Rebecca Cheptegei’s journey in athletics began in 2010 when she quickly made a name for herself in the world of long-distance and marathon running. Over the years, she participated in various international competitions, representing Uganda in multiple events. Notably, she competed in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, finishing 44th in the women’s marathon.

Over her career, she has consistently placed in the top ranks of various international races, including winning the Padova Marathon in 2022 and earning a podium finish in the 2021 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.
