KAMPALA, Uganda — The hearing in the incitement of violence case against Dr. Kizza Besigye and Samuel Lubega Mukaaku has been postponed until Feb. 11, 2025, to allow the prosecution to present its final witness.
In today’s court session at the Buganda Road Magistrates Court, the defense, led by Erias Lukwago, cross-examined Detective Sergeant Oryema Steven, a scene of crime officer. Prosecutors Ivan Kyazze and Allan Mucunguzi then requested the postponement to summon the last witness.
Dr. Besigye appeared in court under tight security, with heavy deployment around the court and nearby roads. He and Mukaaku are accused of inciting the public to protest against high commodity prices in June 2022.
According to the prosecution, the two used a loudspeaker to urge the public to overthrow the government, an act described as incitement to violence.
Besigye, currently in detention on security-related charges, is scheduled to appear before the Makindye Court Martial on Feb. 3. He will then return to the Buganda Road Court on Feb. 11 for his case alongside Mukaaku.
