Airtel Uganda has confirmed plans to begin deploying 5G gear at 50 sites across central Kampala from Sunday, July 30.
Together with rival MTN Uganda, Airtel won 5G frequencies in the government’s auction last month.
The Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) has now released the spectrum to the operators, allowing them to commence their 5G launches – MTN’s is expected imminently as well.
Airtel Uganda Managing Director Manoj Murali said: “By the end of the year we will have covered many more sites, especially in the cities. We will have transformed the way people, communities, and businesses experience high-speed broadband internet.
5G has a good potential to transform services like e-learning, telemedicine, manufacturing, and commercial agriculture.”
UG Standards understands that Airtel will on Sunday 30th July 2023 switch on the first 5G tower in Uganda and Buganda will be the pilot region.
The Katikiro of Buganda,Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga will preside over the momentous launch to be held in Bulage, Mengo.
