Kampala, Uganda – African leaders are gathering in Kampala, Uganda, for a three-day summit aimed at transforming the continent’s agriculture sector.
The Extraordinary Summit on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) brings together heads of state, ministers, and experts to discuss strategies for sustainable agricultural growth.
The CAADP initiative, launched in 2003, seeks to increase food security and nutrition, reduce rural poverty, and promote economic development while protecting the environment.
“Africa has the potential to become a breadbasket for the world,” said African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat. “But we need to invest in our agriculture sector, improve productivity, and enhance regional trade.”
The summit’s objectives include endorsing the draft Kampala CAADP Declaration and the Ten-Year CAADP Strategy and Action Plan (2026-2035).
These documents provide a vision for transforming Africa’s agrifood systems and outline strategies for achieving sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity.
The event is being held at the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Kampala, with over 1,000 participants expected to attend.
African Union leaders are under pressure to deliver on their promises to boost agriculture and reduce poverty on the continent.
Critics say that despite progress in some areas, many African countries still struggle with food insecurity, malnutrition, and poverty.
The summit is seen as a critical moment for African leaders to reaffirm their commitment to transforming the continent’s agriculture sector and improving the lives of millions of people.
