On Sunday morning, former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Kizza Besigye and his Red Card Movement colleague Mukaku Lubega travelled from Kampala destined for Soroti City.
The duo was going to campaign for Moses Attan, the FDC candidate in the Soroti East parliamentary by-election, which is due on July 28.
The two made a stopover for breakfast at Igar café and petrol station in Jinja city.
But out of nowhere, police immediately surrounded their car and ordered them to return to Kampala.
But Besigye moved out of his vehicle and entered the cafe and used the back door to get to Kyabazinga road, where he jumped on a boda boda which was seen heading towards Iganga.
Police later blocked Besigye’s vehicle registration number; UBA 695R, and arrested all the occupants including, Lubega, Ketra Komugisha, Ronald Muhinda, and the driver, Fred Kato. The vehicle was later towed to Nalufenya police station and his aides were detained at the police station.
A few hours later, Dr Besigye arrived in Soroti City to join the FDC campaign trail.
Already on the trail are FDC President Patrick Amuriat Oboi, MPs Nandala Mafabi, Adeke Anna, Kabuusu Moses, Isodo Stella, Emigu Julius, Joan Alobo and Amuria District chairman Emabu Steven.
The Electoral Commission has cleared three candidates to vie for the Soroti East by election scheduled to take place on Thursday. These include the National Resistance Movement’s Herbert Edmond Ariko, Pascal Amuriat of the Uganda People’s Congress party and Forum for Democratic Change candidate Moses Attan.
Vice President Jessica Alupo, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong are also in Soroti campaigning for Ariko.
Several ministers including Gen Jeje Odongo (Foreign Affairs), Musa Ecweru (State Minister, works), Peter Ogwang (State Minister, sports), Hellen Adoa (State Minister, Fisheries) and Kenneth Obote Ongalo (Teso Affairs) among others are also camped in Soroti to canvass support for NRM.
The Director for mobilization at the NRM secretariate Rose Mary Seninde urged voters to send someone who will join a bigger family of decision makers for improved services. “I therefore appeal to you to vote Herbert Ariko”, she requested.
On 24 of May 2022, Court Of Appeal threw out the incumbent MP for Soroti city east Moses Okia Attan, on grounds that his elections were conducted in unlawfully gazetted boundaries.
Mr Attan of FDC and EC were dragged to court by Herbert Ariko formally of FDC, now serving as private secretary to Anita Among, Speaker of Parliament.
