GKO Security guards try to rob DTB bank branch they guarded, Police say

A dramatic attempted robbery at a Diamond Trust Bank in Wakiso, Uganda, unfolded early Sunday morning. Police foiled the heist, discovering that the perpetrators were the very security guards hired to protect the bank.

Police in Wakiso District foiled an attempted robbery at Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) in Corner East Village Parish, Wakiso Town Council, at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Sunday.

According to police reports, two individuals, initially unidentified but later confirmed as security guards attached to GKO Security Limited, attempted to rob the bank where they were on night duty.

According to the report, Mobile Money wallets linked to mobile network operators had grown to 36.9 million, as of June, while 3.8 million were administered by licensed non-mobile network operator payment service providers.

“Our officers responded swiftly to the scene, and upon arrival, the suspects hid in the ceiling,” stated a Wakiso Police spokesperson. “They were warned to surrender, but instead, they cocked their rifles, leading police to fire towards their hiding place.”

During the confrontation, one suspect, identified as Okawa Emmanuel, was fatally shot.

The second suspect, Okelo Justin, surrendered and was immediately taken into custody.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the two guards allegedly planned the robbery due to not having received their salaries for over three months.

“We currently have one suspect in custody at Wakiso Police Station. Investigations are ongoing, and further details will be provided as they become available,” the police said.
