KAMPALA, Uganda — Police on weeekend refuted social media reports claiming the death of retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Sam Omara, confirming that he is critically ill but alive.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said, “I have just spoken to one of his sons 15 minutes ago. He told me that his father is in critical condition but not dead.”
Omara, 65, has been battling serious health issues, including prostate cancer and recent kidney failure. He underwent dialysis at Mulago National Referral Hospital last year.
A prominent figure in the Uganda Police Force, Omara previously served as the Kampala North Police Operations Commander. In this role, he was central to managing the 2011 “walk-to-work” protests led by opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. His handling of the protests drew criticism from opposition activists who accused him of using heavy-handed tactics.
Following his retirement from the police force, Omara joined the private security sector and recently became the Deputy CEO at Arrow Security Services, owned by Capt. Mike Mukula, overseeing operations.
The Uganda Police Force has pledged to cover Omara’s medical expenses after his family sought assistance. Capt. Mukula reportedly engaged President Museveni for support in this matter.
Omara’s family remains hopeful as he continues to receive treatment.
