KAMPALA, Uganda — Confusion erupted at Lubaga Cathedral on Easter Sunday when a man was arrested for posing as a Catholic priest during a service led by Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere.
The man, identified as Peter Mutebi, arrived at the cathedral dressed in priestly attire and attempted to join the clergy in the sanctuary. Church officials and security officers grew suspicious of his behavior and appearance.
Archbishop Ssemogerere was alerted and confronted Mutebi in front of other priests. Video of the exchange, shared by journalist Michael Kakumirizi, showed the Archbishop questioning the man sternly.
“You think this Church is for jokes?” the Archbishop asked, emphasizing the seriousness with which the Catholic Church views its leadership.
Security officers arrested Mutebi and took him for questioning. The incident surprised worshippers gathered for the Easter celebration, with many expressing concern over the impersonation on such a holy day.
Church officials stated that all Catholic priests are known and registered, urging members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals. They commended the security team for their swift action.
The video of the confrontation has circulated widely on social media, drawing praise for the Archbishop’s firm response.
Police are expected to continue their investigation and pursue legal action against Mutebi. His motives and any prior instances of impersonation remain unclear.
The Catholic Church leadership in Kampala has pledged to enhance security measures in all churches, particularly during major events, to ensure the safety of worshippers.
