KAMPALA, Uganda – The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has officially released the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results, highlighting key trends in performance, subject proficiency, and student participation.
Female Candidates Outperform Males in Key Subjects
UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo reported that female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in humanities, physics, and the general paper. This continues a trend observed in previous years, although the number of female students pursuing sciences and mathematics remains lower than that of males.
“Female entries for sciences and mathematics have remained lower than those of males, but we are seeing an encouraging rise in participation,” Odongo noted. “In 2019, only 8,942 females sat for mathematics. This number has more than doubled, marking a 100% increase. Similar trends are observed in physics, chemistry, and biology.”
Performance of Special Needs Candidates
Special needs candidates, including those who are blind, have low vision, or are deaf, were accommodated in the examinations. The highest pass rate was recorded in the ‘others’ category, which includes conditions like asthma, sickle cell anemia, and epilepsy. These candidates were granted an extra 45 minutes per paper to accommodate their conditions.
Challenges in Key Subjects
Despite positive performance trends, UNEB highlighted academic challenges. Many candidates exhibited limited understanding of Uganda’s National Constitution, a key reference in history exams. Economics candidates struggled to apply knowledge to real-life situations, particularly in areas such as national income, market structures, taxation, and monetary policy. Poor mathematical skills further affected responses in economics-related subjects.
Entrepreneurship education faced obstacles due to a lack of internship placements, with some businesses reportedly charging students for placements. Religious education candidates demonstrated poor application of Biblical and Quranic teachings to everyday life.
Geography performance declined, with students struggling to apply statistical methods and fieldwork skills to real-world geographical issues.
Security, Gratitude, and Examination Integrity
Odongo expressed gratitude to security agencies, school administrators, and education stakeholders for ensuring a smooth examination process. Unlike at the UCE level, he commended UACE examiners for their professionalism and dedication, noting that there were no reports of examiner strikes or disruptions.
How to Access Results
Results are now accessible via:
- School Portals – Schools can log in to the UNEB online portal to download results.
- SMS Service – Candidates can check results by sending ‘UACE [Index Number]’ to 6600 on MTN and Airtel networks.
- Hard Copies – These will be sent to schools later, with UNEB providing further communication on their availability.
Correction and Amendment Period
Candidates and school administrators have 21 working days from the release date to submit queries and amendment requests electronically through the UNEB portal. This ensures timely corrections and certificate issuance.
Odongo concluded by thanking all stakeholders and reaffirming UNEB’s commitment to maintaining examination integrity and academic excellence in Uganda.
