Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has called upon Ugandan women to leverage the Women’s Parliament as a platform to champion their welfare, improve living conditions, and advance the aspirations of girls across the country.
Speaking during the 2nd Women’s Parliament Plenary Sitting at Parliament, Among emphasized the importance of commitment and action in addressing the challenges women face, particularly domestic violence.
“As we gather here today, we owe it to the millions of girls out there, to not only demonstrate but also commit to improving their welfare, living conditions, and realization of their aspirations,” she stated.
The sitting, attended by over 400 female leaders, activists, and policymakers, served as a moment of reflection on the progress made by the women’s movement over the years and the challenges that still need to be addressed.
Among noted that while Uganda has made strides in women’s empowerment, domestic violence remains a critical issue affecting many households.
She urged Parliament and stakeholders to push for stronger policies and grassroots interventions to protect women and girls from abuse.
“The sitting and its attendant activities are a commemoration of the gains made by the women’s movement over the years and a point of reflection over the numerous milestones that we aspire to achieve in the future,” Among remarked.
During the session, participants discussed strategies to strengthen legal frameworks, enhance economic empowerment for women, and promote awareness campaigns to end gender-based violence.
Among further called upon women leaders across Uganda to take an active role in protecting the girl child from harmful cultural practices, early marriages, female circumcision, rape, and school dropouts.
“We must ensure that the girl child is protected from rape, school dropouts, and early marriages. I am a mother of boys, but I love girls so much.” Speaker Anita Among said.
Among hailed President Yoweri Museveni for his commitment to economic empowerment programs for women, which have enabled many to achieve financial independence.
