KAMPALA, Uganda — The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRIC&DB) has been instrumental in driving the success of the Parish Development Model (PDM) in the Busoga region. The agency’s outstanding performance in promoting livestock production and productivity has been a key factor in the region’s economic transformation.

As a critical agency implementing the PDM, NAGRIC&DB has been at the forefront of promoting production, storage, processing, and marketing in the region. The agency’s efforts have focused on breeding and multiplying high-performance livestock breeds, boosting community breeding outreach programs, and mass-producing livestock feed.

The results have been impressive, with over 7,000 farmers in the region benefiting from NAGRIC&DB’s initiatives. The agency’s interventions have led to a significant increase in livestock production and productivity, with many farmers reporting improved incomes and livelihoods.

One of the key factors contributing to NAGRIC&DB’s success is its transformation of Kasolwe stock farm into a Centre of Excellence. This initiative has enabled the establishment of various enterprises, including poultry, fish, piggery, goat, and cattle breeding. A 5MT/hr animal feed mill has also been set up to process high-quality, affordable feeds for farmers in the region.

The Centre of Excellence has also established a skilling and knowledge transfer complex, which aims to disseminate livestock, poultry, and fish breeding and production solutions through skilling of farmers, students, veterinary and para-veterinary professionals. This initiative has greatly improved the capacity of farmers and other stakeholders in the livestock sector.

The government has also established a liquid nitrogen plant in Njeru to support breeding and multiplication of high-quality livestock breeds. This initiative has benefited over 4,000 farmers, reducing their costs and improving breeding timelines.

NAGRIC&DB’s efforts have also included the establishment of a community breeding satellite center in Iganga, which has reached over 1,500 farmers through mass trainings and artificial insemination programs. The center has also provided specialized training and skilling in better animal husbandry practices.

The impact of NAGRIC&DB’s initiatives has been felt across the region, with many farmers reporting improved livelihoods and incomes. The agency’s interventions have also contributed to the region’s economic transformation, with the livestock sector emerging as a key driver of growth and development.

The success of NAGRIC&DB’s initiatives in the Busoga region is a testament to the agency’s commitment to promoting livestock production and productivity. As the government continues to implement the PDM, NAGRIC&DB’s outstanding performance is expected to play a critical role in driving the model’s success.

In recognition of NAGRIC&DB’s outstanding performance, President Yoweri Museveni has commended the agency for its efforts in promoting livestock production and productivity. The President’s praise is a testament to the agency’s hard work and dedication to driving economic transformation in the region.

As NAGRIC&DB continues to implement its initiatives in the Busoga region, the agency is expected to play an increasingly important role in driving the success of the PDM. With its outstanding performance and commitment to promoting livestock production and productivity, NAGRIC&DB is poised to make a lasting impact on the region’s economic transformation.
