A man in western Uganda has been killed by his own family members after he was accused of stealing a Christmas chickens.
Tumwesigye Deus, 38, was hacked to death by his relatives in Kyembeho village, Kaharo sub-county, Kabale District, in the early hours of Christmas Eve.
According to police, Deus had broken into the kitchen of his brother, Byaruhanga Alex, at around 04:00 local time, and stolen two chickens. Byaruhanga Alex raised the alarm, and Deus was chased and caught by his relatives while trying to enter his own house.
The relatives, including Byaruhanga Alex and another brother, Nasasira Osbert, then attacked Deus with machetes, killing him on the spot.
“The suspects, who are also family members of the deceased, claimed that Deus had been a habitual thief in the area,” said police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate.
Deus’s sister, Kesande Fausat, and the area local council chairman, Kanyankole Venansio, have been arrested to aid in investigations.
The police have launched a manhunt for other suspects who are still at large, including Byaruhanga Alex and Nasasira Osbert, who are believed to have fled the scene.
Maate urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
“This is a tragic incident, and we urge the public to report crimes to the authorities instead of resorting to violence,” said ASP Maate.
