KAMPALA -A group of Democratic Party (DP) Members have asked Hon. Nobert Mao, the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs purporting to be party president, to concentrate on Cabinet affairs and government matters than destabilizing their Party.
These led by Benedicto Kiwanuka Galiko contend they felt angry when early this week when Mao held a press briefing expressed commitment to continue working with National Resistance Movement (NRM) which these members strongly oppose.
“As you all aware, we still have a case before court which outlawed Mao’s group in party leadership as well as another case where we accuse the Minister for contempt of Court. Unfortunately this case has been delayed by court, which may be reason why we have continued with leadership wrangles with in the party.”
He also noted that It’s against the Party laws , to have someone working against the Party’s rules and regulations, continuing to portray himself as a party President.
“As DP, we need a special committee to be put in place with trusted individuals who can steer part affairs forward during this period when the party top leadership is considered to have been constituted through unlawful means.”
John Baptist Mukisa , another DP member, advised that all those that were engaged in validating the cooperation of their Party with NRM, to be sidelined because they didn’t for their own self interest without involving majority of the party members.
On various occasions, Hon. Nobert Mao has insisted that he is still a staunch full Democratic Party member who is serving under NRM government for the betterment of this country.
On December 10th 2024, while addressing a Press briefing at DP headquarters at Balintuma Road in Kampala, Hon. Nobert Mao revealed that he is in talks with the government to have their cooperation (NRM and DP) renewed so that more members can be granted opportunity to serve in government which has angered many.
In 2022, Mao ( on behalf of DP) and Museveni (on behalf of NRM) signed a deal between the parties and this resulting into having Mao appointed as a Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, the position he still holds to date.
