GULU, Uganda UG STANDARD — MTN Uganda has pledged UGX 20 million to support the first-ever Gulu City Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, December 7, 2024. The announcement was made at a handover ceremony held at Jaca Gardens in Gulu City.
Denis Harindimana, MTN Uganda’s Northern Region Marketing Coordinator, presented the donation to the marathon’s organizers, the Great North Run Company. Harindimana highlighted MTN Uganda’s commitment to community initiatives and cultural heritage.
“The Gulu City Marathon aligns with MTN’s belief that together, we are unstoppable. This event brings together people to celebrate culture, promote tourism, and support education in Northern Uganda. We are honored to partner with the Great North Run Company in this endeavor,” said Harindimana.
The marathon, themed “Running for Culture and Heritage,” aims to showcase Gulu City’s cultural richness and historical significance. Funds raised will support the Dero Kwan Initiative, a charity promoting education in Northern Uganda. Participants can choose from races of 5km, 10km, 21km, and 42km, passing landmarks such as the Gulu War Memorial and Gulu City Main Market.
Fionah Latiga Lamaro, from the Great North Run Company, expressed gratitude for MTN Uganda’s sponsorship.
“MTN Uganda’s contribution is crucial to the success of this event. It will not only celebrate our heritage but also create educational opportunities in the region. We are proud to have MTN as a partner,” said Lamaro.
MTN Uganda also offers an exclusive discount on marathon kits. Kits are priced at UGX 60,000 and can be purchased via MTN MoMo Merchant Code 735488. The first 100 customers to use MTN MoMo will receive a 50% discount, paying only UGX 30,000.
The Gulu City Marathon is set to become an annual event every second Saturday of December. MTN Uganda continues to support initiatives that empower communities, celebrate diversity, and contribute to Uganda’s development.
