The full production of passports has resumed three weeks after it was scaled down to half capacity to cater for a system upgrade, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced.
The ministry spokesperson, Mr Simon Mundeyi, on Monday, June 6, 2022, said they have completed the system upgrade and are now ready to clear the backlog of passport applications.
“We have now completed the system upgrade which we have been doing for the last three or so weeks and this means we have now resumed production of passports at full capacity,” he said.
He explained that they are also handling emergencies first.

“Anybody who has been complaining about passport delays should now prepare to come for their passports. This week and next week, we shall be clearing the backlog,” Mr Mundeyi said.
“After two weeks, we will embark on the normal applications,” he said.
Mr Mundeyi said the system upgrade, including an Automatic Finger Integrated System (AFIS), will see a total of 2500 passports produced every day.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs also warned members of the public against using brokers whom he said on many occasions defraud unsuspecting members of the public with fees higher than the stipulated ones, but also don’t deliver.
Mudenyi revealed that with a passport centre in Abu Dhabi and a new one to be soon opened in Dubai, over 100,000 Ugandans in UAE will have choice on where to renew their passports.
He hinted at opening other passport centres in Pretoria, Denmark, Ottawa and Beijing in China soon.
“Later, wherever there is a Ugandan Embassy, we will open a passport centre,” Mundeyi noted.
