President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has donated Shs413 million to support Buganda Kingdom’s “Mwanyi Terimba” project, which aims to promote coffee farming and alleviate poverty. The President commended the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, for his efforts in fighting poverty through coffee production.
Museveni also encouraged farmers to engage in food production, emphasizing the importance of self-sufficiency. “Coffee is only a beverage…people will always need food. Therefore, involving our village small-scale operations into food lines is the safest insurance for their prosperity,” he said.
The President’s support was delivered by State House Comptroller Jane Barekye during an agricultural exhibition in Luwero District. The event aimed to promote wealth creation efforts in the county and Buganda Kingdom.
Katikkiro Mayiga welcomed the financial support and promised continued cooperation. “We appreciate the contribution and look forward to better cooperation,” he said. Mayiga also urged farmers to work together through cooperatives to enhance productivity and better yields.
The Buganda Kingdom’s wealth creation efforts, which began in 2022, aim to enhance productivity and improve livelihoods in rural areas. The Kingdom has been promoting coffee production, among other activities, to empower its subjects.
The event was attended by a section of Members of Parliament from Buganda, among others. Hajji Hamis Mukasa Kakomo, the Kabaka’s representative in Bulemeezi County, assured the State House Comptroller that the Kingdom believes in agriculture as one of its strong pillars of wealth creation.
The “Mwanyi Terimba” project has already shown success in enhancing the livelihoods of people within the kingdom, and the President’s support is expected to further boost the initiative.
