The police have announced an immediate halt to Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) consultative activities following a tragic accident at Maya along Masaka Road, which resulted in the deaths of three people. According to a statement released on Friday evening, the accident involved a collision in Bobi Wine’s procession, and police blame the opposition party’s failure to comply with set guidelines for the incident.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga stated that the police have decided to halt all further consultative activities by NUP until the matter is thoroughly investigated and resolved.
“As the government agency responsible for protecting life and property and maintaining law and order, we have decided to halt all further consultative activities of NUP with immediate effect until this matter is conclusively investigated and resolved,” Enanga said.
Enanga noted that NUP had disregarded the agreed-upon guidelines for conducting consultative meetings, despite a meeting between police leadership and NUP leadership at police headquarters on May 27, 2024. “NUP has continued to act with impunity, as demonstrated in today’s unfortunate incident at Maya,” he added.
The police appealed to the public to remain vigilant and observe law and order, warning that anyone who acts contrary to public order and safety will be held accountable under Ugandan law. “The safety of Ugandans will always remain our priority,” Enanga emphasized.
