The United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) met with journalists on May 23, 2024, at Nob View Hotel in Ntinda, Kampala, to discuss the progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country. The meeting aimed to capture the voices of journalists in the Voluntary National Review (VNR) report, which will be presented to the world in July 2024 in New York.
Richard Baguma Tinkasimiire, UNAU Secretary-General, emphasized the crucial role of the media in contributing to the smooth implementation of SDGs, particularly through creating awareness and knowledge among communities. He noted that media can expose barriers hindering the attainment of sustainable development and hold duty bearers accountable.
Journalists highlighted challenges such as shrinking media space, lack of awareness, limited resources, commercial pressures, and political interference. Linda Asaba, UNAU Programs Coordinator, urged the media to tell truth to power and bridge the gaps in pushing stakeholders to achieve SDGs by 2030.
According to the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and SDG Centre for Africa, Uganda has made significant progress towards achieving SDGs, ranking 18th among 52 African countries with an overall score of 54.88. However, there are still gaps and challenges, particularly in achieving SDGs 1, 11, and 16.
The 17 SDGs include: No poverty, Zero hunger, Good health and well-being, Quality education, Gender equality, Clean water and sanitation, Affordable and clean energy, Decent work and economic growth, Industry, innovation and infrastructure, Reduced inequalities, Sustainable cities and communities, Responsible consumption and production, Climate action, Life below water, Life on land, Peace, justice, and strong institutions, and Partnerships for the goals.
