A section of the Kampala-Masaka Highway has sunk in, causing massive traffic congestion and paralysis of vehicle and motorcycle movement at Nakasozi, Kyengera Town Council. The incident occurred due to heavy rainfall in the area, which has left only one lane of the road usable.
As a result, many road users have been forced to seek alternative routes, including Nabbingo to Kyengera, Kitemu-Kasenge-Nateete, and others. However, this has led to heavy traffic in the area, with vehicles crawling along the affected stretch of road.
According to SP Michael Kananura, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Traffic Police Spokesperson, the traffic flow on the same route is likely to be severely affected as all motorists are now using only one side of the road. This is expected to worsen later in the day, as it is a day when many vehicles typically return from upcountry areas to Kampala.
In a statement, the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety informed the public that the road between Kyengera and Budo Junction along the Kampala-Masaka Highway has partially sunk in due to heavy rains. The authorities have urged the public to exercise utmost discipline and patience as teams from Traffic Police and UNRA (Uganda National Roads Authority) assess the damage and work to restore the road to its normal state.
The incident has caused significant disruption to traffic flow, and motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and seek alternative routes where possible. The authorities are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible to minimize further inconvenience to road users.
