KAMPALA – Labour College of East Africa (LCEA) based in Uganda is seeking collaboration with Workers University, one of Egypt’s top universities specializing in technology development and labor relations.
A delegation from the North African country is on a working visit to Uganda to explore potential areas of collaboration including student exchange opportunities between the two institutions.
Workers University is one of Egypt’s most important universities in terms of technological development and international quality workshops, and it is also the only academy that provides its students with hands-on experience in factories.
Arinaitwe Rwakajara, the Director Labour College of East Africa and MP representing workers in the Uganda Parliament welcomed the team and informed them that the college was open to partnerships and collaborations in line with its policy of Internationalization.
“We are trying to enhance our relationship in a way that when our students finish here (at Labour College of East Africa) a diploma they should do a degree but also we are in negotiations that they make it an education center for the Workers University of Egypt such that our students can graduate as degree holders from here but also we get more skills from Egypt to improve our education system,” Rwakajara said.
He added once the partnership materializes, they will look at twining the two institutions.
“If institutions of learning work together, and share knowledge to transform our people as a nation, then that means Africa has already been transformed and ready to face any challenge,” Rwakajara said, hoping that the budding relationship between the two institutions will be a contribution in transformation of the people of both countries.
Dr. Michael Muhumuza, the Principal-Labour College of East Africa says they seek to partner with the Egyptian university in different areas of interest including Agro-Processing, Restoration of the Nile Basin, tourism, and technology among other salient issues.
“We have observed gaps. Whereas your university is specialized in technology development, industrial relations, and the application and development of international quality certificates, you currently do not offer Labour related studies. We offer Labour Studies but at Diploma and certificate levels. We, therefore, seek to collaborate with you to upgrade our Diplomas to bachelor’s level accredited by your university,” Dr. Muhumuza said on Monday.
He added, “Upgrading can also be done for our Diploma in Livestock Management and Entrepreneurship programme to cater to the emerging needs of livestock management. We can also introduce a programmes to cater for modern agriculture, irrigation technologies, agro-processing, and post-harvest handling.”
LCEA whose programmes are accredited by either NCHE or approved by UBTEB or DIT offers courses in Labour Studies and Workers’ Rights, Catering and Hotel Management, Accounting and Finance, and Insurance Business and Risk Management.
Other courses are; Information Technology, Livestock Management and Entrepreneurship, Project Planning and Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Human Resource Management, and Business Administration
Dr. Muhumuza said the college also offers Labour Management Consultancies, Occupational Health, and Safety, Business, and Management under its LCEA Human Resource Consult (LCEAHrC) brand, among others.
LCEA was established in 2014 with the mission of building a research-driven college contributing to the progression of society with employment-oriented knowledge but also advancing skills in Labour Productivity, Labour Relations, Workers’ Rights, and creating leaders of tomorrow.
