KAMPALA, Uganda — Seven people, including a U.S. Embassy staffer, were killed in severe flooding that swept through Uganda’s capital, Kampala, after a torrential downpour Wednesday.
The flooding caused widespread destruction, with reports of motor accidents, pedestrians being swept away and significant property damage across the city, said Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire.
Bogere George, a U.S. Embassy employee, drowned while riding a motorcycle in Luteete, Kasangati Town Council, Owoyesigyire said. Police recovered his body, along with that of another unidentified male adult.
Three bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area, while two young children, Otim Kisa Eliza, 3, and Ochaka Chon, 11 months, drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.
Rescue teams were assessing the situation and providing assistance. Authorities urged the public to take precautions during heavy rains and avoid unnecessary movement.
Boda boda riders were advised not to cross flooded roads. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Police will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
